 the versailles Treaty was humiliating for Germany but not so harsh but still it's so called harshness was used in national-socialist propaganda the real problem was great depression and economic crisis it helped to develop Fascist movement (after war crisis not great depression) in Italy and spred that view of state among many European nationalists, the deperession mostly hard hit the Germany among European countries which helped in gaining popularity for NSDAP and their economic model of mixed soxialism and state interventionism
