The best answers for this question would be the following:  He believes they are bad spirits who are going to kill him.  He thinks they can’t be any worse than his previous master.  That is because when he saw the port, he saw blck people that were chained together like dogs. And a lot of thoughts were running through his mind, a lot of negative thoughts like he will experience immense fear.
