The tail of a comet always points away from the star that it is orbiting. The length of the tail grows as the comet approaches the star, since more debris is being blown off by the solar radiation. The tail shrinks as it moves away from the star, seeing as there is less of that said radiation affecting its structure. Hope that helped! =)
